"The digital box is doing good."
"Very handy for recording games while at work. Tuner has strength meter making it easy to adjust antenna. Very happy with it."
"Plug and go. There were 2 other brands I've purchased from WM. Emetic worked well at first, but then quit. No power light. Someone said: May have to download new software? How the heck do you do that? Another type, that looks JUST LIKE the Emetic, didn't work, even just out of the box. Will be returning. My TV's are great- I don't want a smart tv."
"Adequate basic cable converter. Useful in RV when Campground provides cable TV."
"Old Aluratek converter box quit working after about 5 years use, suspected it was burnt out capacitors as that seemed to be the common problem after watching lots of YouTube videos, tried fixing it myself but when I had the box opened noticed it would be a lot of work and time consuming to disconnect all the capacitors and test each one individually, also would require more time to make a trip to the store to find the right size capacitor for the repair. Also my wife was missing her TV and was in a hurry for me to fix it. Checked out Best Buy’s web site and found they had them in stock, ordered one. Picked it up from the store and had it installed and working about an hour later, wife is now happy. Works good, price is right."
"Works great! Easy installation."
"I purchased a used TV, not knowing that Vizio made a TV model without a built-in turner. I already had an antenna on the roof, and I prefer to watch the channels from my local area rather than the streaming channels. This converter is the answer to my needs! Thank you Aluratek!"
"I saw some negative comments but thought I'd give it a try and I'm happy I did. I'm saving money now every month and I haven't had any of the issues I saw people complaining about (dying units, failed playback). I'd suggest the additional antennae unit if you're in a more rural area like me."
"After my 20-year-old disc-based DVR died I needed a replacement. I tried a Tablo and returned it right away; it required using apps on a smart phone and on the television to link it to my house WiFi. The Tablo was a pain to set up, the phone app glitched and had to be uninstalled and reinstalled, the programming interface was horrible, there wasn't a dedicated remote control, and using their app on my LG TV did not allow me to use Closed Captioning on recorded shows! I decided to try this Aluratek DVR instead. The Aluratek, in my opinion, is far better than the Tablo. I have the Aluratek connected to my A/V Amp with an HDMI cable. With HDMI there's no video/audio lag; everything is in perfect synch. For data storage I plugged in a Western Digital 1TB USB SSD. Some have said you can't use one that big but it works perfectly. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to show how much space is being used or how much space is left on the SSD drive. Both the Aluratek and the WD SSD stay relatively cool during recording and playback. No heat issues. Recording and playback performance for this system is spectacular. Again, I don't use it as a tuner, but only as a DVR. Connected to a gigantic amplified antenna hanging in my attic, I get over 100 channels OTA. Even though many of them are useless to me (Spanish language, shopping channels, religious programming, etc. ) I get all the entertainment channels I want with crystal clarity and beautiful resolution. The programming interface is friendly enough and the little remote works just fine from 15 feet away. I especially love the FF and REW abilities which allow speeding through commercials on recorded programs. Oh, yes. . . the Closed Captioning works too! Perfect. As others have noted, the display on the front of the box is odd and useless. It probably should display the time of day when the unit is not recording and maybe display the elapsed recording time while it is recording something, but it doesn't. Additionally, in Standby mode the box has a bright red LED light glaring out of the front. I put a tiny little piece of masking tape over that to minimize the room glare. The menu has an option for Software Updates but I have looked online and have not found any. I suppose if I found one I could copy the file to the USB SSD from my computer and then plug it back into the Aluratek to update it. My only concern with this unit is how long it will last. Some people have complained it flaked out after only a few months. Mine is plugged into a battery backup power supply with full surge and spike protection so I am hoping it will survive for a few years. It sits on a covered shelf with plenty of ventilation. At only $50, I'll be very happy if it lasts for a year or more! I have only used it for a week but so far it has been flawless. No reason not to give it five stars for value, bang-for-the-buck, ease of installation, and overall DVR performance. Highly recommended."
