  • Walk The Halloween Runway

Yay! Happy October! I love October because it means that the weather is starting to cool down, everyone is slowly embracing the upcoming holiday seasons, pumpkin flavored EVERYTHING, and Halloween costumes!

Every year I love to research and look up how creative and clever people can get with their costumes - even for their pets! Some are straight up hilarious and others are VERY creative - either way, they're all enjoyable and I would love to share some tech-related Halloween costumes I've found on the good old' internet this morning!

    1. Pokemon!

If you haven't been living under a rock this year, you will know that Pokemon has taken over the galaxy. With Nintendo's Pokemon Go app installed in almost every smartphone in the world, people are reconnecting with their old or current childhood moments - with costumes!

    Pokemon

    2. Star Wars

People really go all out for Star Wars! I mean ALL OUT! As in, you can hardly tell the difference between the person in the costume VS. the actual character in the movie. For example, check out Queen Amidala...

    StarWars1
    Pretty good, huh?

    StarWars2

So cute! Girl version of Han Solo!

  • Music Festivals - Then & Now

Today marks one of the most significant days in music history. On this day in 1969, the Woodstock Music Festival makes its debut on a 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York.

    Woodstock1

Woodstock was more than just a music festival. It was an event where young adults or "hippies" gathered together, rain or shine, to listen to some of the most iconic musicians of our time perform live such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Band, Janis Joplin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

In 1969, our country was going through a sad time where U.S. soldiers were fighting and dying in the Vietnam War meanwhile many who were not fighting the war at home were doing their part and trying to end the war to create a more harmonious world filled with peace and love instead of a hateful one. Woodstock allowed more than 400,000 attendees to create memories that made them feel involved and part of an historic event.

Technology in the 60's was obviously not as advanced as today's, but the people back then didn't know that! Landline telephones and 3 pound Polaroid cameras were probably the main devices that were used and they still had the best time of their lives. Today we have devices that we use to contact our family and friends that can also hold thousands of photos.

Today, it's so easy to get all the details on music festivals just by using your smartphone! Not only that, but the technology used during performances are simply amazing. Coachella valley Music and Arts Festival in California is probably the most popular music festival today. Inspired and influenced by Woodstock, Coachella attendees express themselves by mimicking the days of the 60's hippie era mainly through fashion.

Although Coachella will never, ever come close to Woodstock, it still holds its own unique voice especially through the use of technology. From glowing, staticky light rays to holographic images of Tupac Shakur (which was AWESOME!), Coachella is a place to make memories for today's young adults.

Here's an infographic that shows how technology has advanced from the Woodstock days to today's music festivals.

  • Olympics Games Technology

Technology continues to evolve everyday and it all happens so fast! 4 years ago in London, the 2012 Olympic Games were taking place and the technology then compared to now has transformed tremendously. If you have been tuning into the Olympics this year, you probably have already noticed that your experience watching it this year is completely been enhanced since 2012. The technology that has been newly installed into stadiums have definitely made the performances of athletes more enjoyable and clearer for us.

Here are some of the things that made their debut at Rio 2016 Olympics:

    Volleyball & Beach Volleyball

For the first time ever, Rio 2016 will be able to use video replays to reverse a referee's call if it was a bad one. A second referee will be able to use footage to see if there were any wrong calls and all at the same time, replays will be displayed to the entire arena.

    Rowing and Canoe-ing

GPS devices have been attached to every vessel so that spectators will be able to follow the rowing and canoe events in Rio with better detail from speed meters to showing which direction the competitors are going.

    Weightlifting

We normally see shots of the weight lifters from the front or the side, but at Rio 2016 there is a camera dolly that follows every movement and angles from the competitor.

    Swimming

Distance swimmers lose track of their lap count all the time and that can really distract them and get them off their game.

At Rio, there will be digital lap counters sitting at the bottom of the pool of each lane so that when the swimmers hit the wall with their hands, the counters will automatically update the lap count.

  • Techgiving Day

Things have certainly changed since the first meal of the pilgrims and Native Americans. When Abraham Lincoln announced Thanksgiving to be national holiday in 1863, the most technology that came into play was photography. However, today we can recognize the important role technology can play in this delicious holiday. With Thanksgiving Day coming up, you can tech it up with these ideas:

    Siri

Need to know the exact measurement for your pumpkin pie? Don't bother browsing through websites for the answer - just ask Siri! You can use your hands for more important things. I always call on my dear friend Siri for pretty much...anything and I know I will be depending on her while I am prepping up all my Thanksgiving side dishes (the mother-in-law will be making the turkey. I'm not messing with the main course!)

    Cooking / meal planning apps

In this digital day and age, utilizing technology when you're prepping and cooking for hours sounds like a good idea,  right? Let's face it. We're not our grandmas. I don't know how they did it - laying out platters and platters of food on the table all on her own. If I even attempted to do all that without any tech let's just say there would be no Thanksgiving dinner and most likely a burnt down house. Download a planning list app like Clear+ to menu assistants like Snapguide to help you out on the day of.

    Tech- Cooking Tools :

It's almost too easy to overcook your turkey if you don't have a close eye on it, and as we all know oven temperatures vary. If you're cooking the turkey this year, all eyes and pressure is on you that the big bird will come out to be juicy and moist a.k.a. perfect. If you purchase yourself a nice wireless meat therometer you can take some pressure off of you and join the family in the living room while your turkey is cooking. Once the turkey is ready and hits the perfect temperature, the wireless therometer will deliver a sound that lets you know that it's ready! Another awesome tool that I wish I had in my kitchen is an electric carving knife! It’s like a MINI chain-saw! Mind. Blown. Sorry delicious turkey, but say hello to my little friend. Muhaha!

    Thanksgiving Football :

Two things are guaranteed on Thanksgiving: Turkey and Football. Okay so if you have been reading my blog posts in the past, it’s pretty obvious that I am a pretty big football fan. I'm so excited to watch a good game while I stuff my face with awesome food, but I still would like to watch other football games as well. In fact there's so much football on TV that you probably can't watch all the games at once. What I like to do (ghetto-style) is have the main game on our TV screen, and then have 2 laptops streaming the other games. Hey, it works! Another way to do it is to record the other games if you have DVR. If you have Verizon as your cell phone provider, make sure to download the NFL Mobile app!  They added a new feature where it allows you to live stream football games!

    Skyping With Your Family :

Thanksgiving is a holiday where you should be able to spend it with your family. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to get every single family member and relative to join you on the special day. FORTUNATELY, there’s Skype. Video-conferencing is the best way to interact with your family visually. We recommend you grab a laptop and prop it up on the Thanksgiving table, start Skype and call in your favorite relative!

    Fun Games :

After pigging out, belt-loosening, and pigging out some more, all you want to do is relax and have fun with the family, right? What about kicking it on the couch and playing some video games? As long as it’s not a gory, nausea-inducing game that's going to cause you to spew your dinner….you’re all good. Some people feel like they need to move around after all the eating so what a better way to just dance around instead? Two words: Dance. Central. Moon-walk and cabbage patch the night off and burn those calories! Another really fun game is the Ellen Degeneres' free app, Heads Up. It's similar to Taboo and Catch Phrase!

Share Your Thanksgiving With The World!

Every Thanksgiving, all of my friends are taking pictures of their dinner table that’s filled with FOOD and posts them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. A part of me feels like they’re trying to say, “My Thanksgiving meal is better than yours!” Ha-ha! But it’s great to see everyone’s posts because I know they’re enjoying the holiday! So why not participate and show off your fabulous dinner table as well? Do it!

    Black Friday Shopping :

Yup. After feeling like a whale, you know it’s priority after Thanksgiving to wake up at 2AM, drive over to the nearest Best Buy, wait in a ridiculous long line, and then most likely get trampled over by strangers as they’re all rushing towards the last 50 inch flat screen TV. Sounds like a blast… You can do that…OR, get a few extra more hours of sleep, walk downstairs in your warm, comfy pajamas, relax on the couch, open your laptop, and start surfing on different websites to make your Black Friday purchases! We will be having our own Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale so stay tuned for those as well!

At Aluratek, we always want to involve technology in our holidays, however, some prefer Thanksgiving to be the few digital-free holidays of the year. And that’s alright with me. As long as you have friends, family, and pumpkin pie – well, that’s all you really need.

How are you going to involve technology this Thanksgiving Day? Visit our FacebookTwitter and Google+ pages to let us know, or leave a comment below!

  • My First CES Experience!

CES. WAS. AWESOME!!! Wow. It was quite amazing what I was able to see and I feel quite lucky to be able to be apart of it all! I wasn't too sure what to expect at CES. All I knew was that it was going to be a big show with big name companies showing off what they got. It was way more then that! There were small booths to gigantic ones that displayed their latest products! From power banks to self vacuums to remote controlled drones to even cars, CES had it all. I was there for only one day, so I had to squeeze in almost everything with just the few hours I had.

image Excited about our road trip to Vegaaaas....except the sleepyhead in the back. What a party pooper! ;)
image_1 Kind of hard to see what's going on because of the net, but there was a pretty cool performance with the use of drones!

image_5 I really liked how Polaroid focused on a lot of creative street art.

IMG_2503 Have you guys heard of Changhong?! I never did, but they sell TV's and they were nice ones too! Look at their exhibit! SO beautiful!
IMG_2504 This is Intel's exhibit. Very futuristic!

    IMG_2507

    image_7 Sony's exhibit.
IMG_2508 Wish we had some more pictures of Samsung's booth! Everything was super clean and they displayed really cool products including a huge CURVED flat screen tv.
IMG_2512 I think of all the exhibits, LG had to be my favorite. They really "up'd" their game this year. What I really liked about their show was that a lot of their products displayed things you can use in your everyday life. Ex: vacuums, kitchenware, wrist watch...etc
IMG_2514 I liked Marley. They sell speakers and headphones, and they had live performances so that was pretty fun.
IMG_2513 I loved their booth! It had a earthy feel to it.
    IMG_2515 sick car, bro!
    IMG_2516 motorcycle / car hybrid?
This was really awesome! It's called 'The Beam'. It allows users to interact with remote locations by combining video and audio with the freedom of motion to move around freely. • Techy New Year's Resolutions!

It’s that time of year again where we take out a piece of paper and pen and jot down our New Year’s resolution. The most common resolutions listed are losing weight, quit smoking, and saving money. These are universal commitments that are timeless, but what about habits that we all struggle with today? Technology has always been meant to make our lives easier, and while it’s obviously known that electronics have enhanced our day-to-day lives, you can’t push away the reality of our anti-social behavior that has been greatly affected.

    phone

So add some tech resolutions to your list for the New Year!

    No Smartphones While Grubbing

While I am SOMETIMES guilty of this….I think it would be nice to start a meal without taking a picture of my food and then sharing it on Instagram. Almost everywhere you go to eat you will find at least one guest leaning over their table trying to get that perfect photo of their meal. It’s pretty funny when you’re the one watching!

Check this BuzzFeed post on people who take pictures of their food!

A big pet peeve of mine is actually when I’m having lunch or dinner with someone and it’s practically pointless because I might as well be having dinner with their phones. Texting, checking social media, emails…all that can wait people! Just eat your food and share that moment with your friend. Whenever my husband and I go out to eat, we stack both our phones and place it at the end of the table, and whoever touches it first has to do something embarrassing. It works because we never lay a finger on it. In a time where we all feel stretched thin and barely have a moment to enjoy someone else’s company, setting the phone down at mealtimes assures that you and company will be able to bond more. Just put your phone down. Simple!

    Don’t Drive Distracted!

Yesterday morning as I was driving to church, I picked up my phone and was looking through my iTunes to change songs. Meanwhile, I heard a loud honk. I looked to my right and there was an old lady staring me down, and as she was honking at me she was yelling “GET OFF THE PHONE!! STOP TEXTING!!!” She was super angry! I wasn’t even texting! My normal self would’ve ignored her, or probably tell her to back off, but I knew she was right. It didn’t matter if I was texting or not.  It was the fact that I had my phone in my hand that was a distraction. It could not only endanger my life, but others as well. Put the phone down, and keep your eyes up folks!

    Backup!

Make sure to back up your files and then back those files up! There’s no such thing as being too safe! Oh man, there were so many incidents where my hard drive would crash and I would regret not backing it up! Once a month, make a copy of your external drive just to be safe. Also another way to back up (if you have a Mac) would be to set up Time Machine to back up your files daily.

I will add all of these to my New Year's resolution! Will you? Visit our FacebookTwitter and Google+ pages to let us know, or leave a comment below

  • 7 Ways To Use Technology On Thanksgiving Day

It's been nearly four hundred years since Plymouth colonists and some friendly Native Americans shared a warm and open feast of thanks.

Today, we are still celebrating Thanksgiving with family and friends. Things have certainly changed since the first meal. When Abraham Lincoln announced Thanksgiving to be national holiday in 1863, the most technology that came into play was photography. However, today we can recognize the important role technology can play in this delicious holiday.

Here are 7 ways to use technology on Thanksgiving Day:

    Cooking Digitally :

In the past, the pages in cookbooks would be bookmarked or torn out, and recipe cards would be selected for this special day. Today, we can say rest in peace to cookbooks and recipe boxes because recipes are easier to find on the internet! I don’t even remember the last time I opened up a cookbook! My favorite part about doing this online is if you want to substitute a certain ingredient, OR if you don’t have that ingredient the internet helps you find alternative solutions that works very well.

    Tech- Cooking Tools :

Bring the digital world right inside your oven this Thanksgiving Day!  Digital thermometers give you perfect meat temperature readings which means no more raw turkey!

I’m so pumped to watch my Niners play this Thursday while I stuff my face with awesome food, but I still would like to watch other football games as well.

Central. Moon-walk and cabbage patch your way to feeling that you got at least some exercise in!

Yup. After feeling like a balloon, you know it’s priority after Thanksgiving to wake up at 2AM, drive over to the nearest Best Buy, wait in a ridiculous long line, and then most likely get trampled over by strangers as they’re all rushing towards the last 50 inch flat screen TV. Sounds like a blast… You can do that…OR, get a few extra more hours of sleep, walk downstairs in your warm, comfy pajamas, relax on the couch, open your laptop, and start surfing on different websites to make your Black Friday purchases!

At Aluratek, we always want to involve technology in our holidays, however, some prefer Thanksgiving to be the few digital-free holidays of the year. And that’s alright with me. As long as you have friends, family, and pumpkin pie – well, that’s all you really need.

Speaking of family, I want to share a hilarious video of my favorite family on Youtube as they're about to enjoy Thanksgiving with their loved ones!

    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
